Course Description

Objectives

The course aims to explore and analyze the economic characteristics of spatial processes and the functioning of regional and urban economic systems. To achieve this, it combines theory, analytical methods, spatially referenced statistical data, and empirical research. Lectures cover a broad spectrum of topics in both theoretical and empirical approaches to Spatial Economics, with special emphasis on contemporary issues and challenges.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

– Understand the critical role of space in economic analysis.

– Be familiar with the core concepts and principles of Spatial Economics.

– Analyze how regional and urban economic systems function and interpret current socio-economic issues at both regional and urban levels.

Content

Key thematic areas include:

– Introduction to Spatial Economics

– Spatial allocation of economic activities

– Regional specialization, interregional trade, and the regional/national multiplier

– Regional and interregional labor market analysis (migration, unemployment)

– Methods of regional analysis (e.g., location quotient, specialization coefficient, gravity models, shift-share analysis)

– Urban formation and development

– Urban hierarchies and systems of cities

– Urban growth and urban rent

– Land use models and spatial structure

– Economic analysis of urban issues

– Analysis of urban and regional development policies.

 Teaching & Assessment

The course includes lectures, laboratory exercises, case study presentations, and class discussions. Student assessment is based on a final written examination. An optional assignment may contribute up to 50% of the final grade.
