The Economic History of a Globalized World

Course Description

Objectives

The purpose of this module is to examine the different aspects of the past of the global economy in a longue durée perspective and to help students:

-develop knowledge of the past global economies;

– understand the elements that contribute to the development or to the crisis and backwardness of economies;

-develop a critical approach and understanding of social and economic changes in a historical perspective. 

Content

This course analyzes the economic space of Europe in a dialogue with the social and political space of other geographical areas (USA, Africa, Asia, etc.). It examines issues related to the global economy in the perception of the Braudel’s longue durée (industrialization, imperial expansion, and empires, market economies, state intervention, welfare state, economies in liberal or totalitarian regimes, migrations, loans and crisis, economy in war or in peace, EU and other international organizations, etc.), It focuses on the notion of globalization and analyzes the processes through which the economic space experience development or crisis. 

Teaching & Assessment

The course has duration of 13 weeks. It encourages active learning and the participation of students in class discussion and oral presentations that help them to share individual approaches with the module leader as well as w Lessons are delivered on a face-to-face teaching in the class. There is also use of internet and ICT in teaching, as well as e-class platform in the teaching, in the communication with students and the conduct of examination in assignments.

Respecting the assessment methods, the lesson has a final written exam (that can contribute to the final mark up to 80%) and assignments (up to 20%). The language of teaching and assessment is Greek.
