Description: Today, particularly so in the face of climate change, an increase global water demand is being observed. To holistically tackle this Global Challenge, there is an urgent need for the development of new approaches to support sustainable water resources management. There is a growing consensus that Earth Observation (EO), land biosphere models and ground instrumentation as well as advances in geoinformation fields such as cloud-computing, big data management and software tools development could pave the way to solve this Challenge. LISTEN-EO aims to unravel the potential of the above technologies to advance our knowledge and also develop a series of innovative methodologies and land surface modelling tools to radically support the forefront of research and practical applications in water resources management. In particular, LISTEN-EO key objectives are: 1)To facilitate the implementation of a series of cutting-edge modelling interventions to SimSphere land biosphere model that will radically evolve its architectural representation and will put it in the forefront of research ongoing in water resources and related studies. 2)To elucidate for the first time the potential of extending the so-called “triangle inversion modelling technique allowing it to derive spatiotemporally estimates of new biophysical parameters useful in water resources studies, when implemented with EO datasets. 3)To develop a new scheme for downscaling global operational products of SSM provided today from EUMETSAT and Copernicus EO data, exploiting a variant of the “triangle” method, LISTEN-EO builds on previously EU & ESA-funded research obtained by the PI. The ground-breaking research it proposes will greatly increase our scientific capability to model water resources at multiple, previously unattained, geographical scales. Lastly, the open access to all LISTEN-EO products delivered will also increase societal return of the project and raise public awareness in the management of water resources.
