Course Description

Objectives

This course seeks to introduce students in this particular form of academic studies that is called “migration studies” and which relates to the examination and investigation of phenomena that are related to the geographic mobility of different human groups and individuals. This course explores many different aspects of the migration phenomenon like voluntary and involuntary forms of mobility, migrations from south to north, from south to south (and from north to the north and south- south) etc. Generally, one could go as far as to argue that the world in which we live today appears to be in constant motion and maybe in constant flux too.

Content

The realities of international migration seen from a Greek perspective. Migration in the age of globalization (and crisis) or alternatively Greece in an era of globalized flows. Voluntary and involuntary forms of migration. Migration theories, models and challenges. Migration and development 1. Migration and Development 2 (contemporary emigration of Greeks). Migration management and selective migration through point based systems. The EU migration system: intra-European and migration from third countries. Examining the concept of integration and various integration models. Winning and losing the Greek citizenship. The Greek crisis and the migration of 'integrated' migrant. Cities, neighborhoods and migration: Identity Conflicts and coexistence. From migration to mobility: Demography, challenges and prospects.

Teaching & Assessment 

A series of lectures in a physical classroom.

Mid term exams (30% of the grade), Final written exams (70% of the grade).
